High DPI Web Sites

One area of Web design that is going to become more important in the coming years is high DPI. For those of us working on WebKit, this will also become an issue for WebKit applications and for Dashboard widgets. What is DPI? DPI stands for “dots per inch” and refers to the number of pixels of [...]

iChat and Adium should get married

That’s right, Apple. You should help Adium out by contributing the one thing that keeps me using iChat - video conferencing. Sorry to say, but iChat isn’t much good for anything else. I like that it looks through my address book for potential iChatting buddies, but anyone with a year of AppleScript experience can do [...]

Mac mini "bundles" at Costco

costco_miniifoAppleStore is pointing out a pretty good deal discovered at Costco.

A Mac mini, wireless keyboard and mouse and Apple Care plan are all bundled together in one big, plastic package for $699US.

Compare that to $847US for a similarly equipped, low-end mini (we don't know the stats of the mini in the package. Has anyone seen one of these?).

We suggest you get in your car right now and drive to Costco!

Vista falling short says WindowsSuperSite guru

6025Vista2-medOur dear old Paul Thurrott, famous windows evangelist and whose Windows SuperSite is like the Gospel according to Gates, regularly reviews the beta versions of the next Windows avatar, aka VISTA (at MS they call these beta CTPs or Community Technical Previews).?He has been following Vista with high hopes since its announcement back in 2003 (a long time ago, in a galaxy far away...) and he is going from disappointment to disillusion.?His latest post, a "Windows Vista February 2006 CTP (build 5308/5342) review" -no joke, they do have some good creative people for naming products- is harshly subtitled "Where Vista Fails".

??You can read some great lines like:

The graphics subsystem is substantially improved, if a little obviously modeled after that in Mac OS X. Heck, half of the features of Windows Vista seem to have been lifted from Apple's marketing materials.

Gartner: Video is Apple's 'Killer App'

gartann01Gartner recently issued a research report in which the firm said that IT departments should issue Macs to graphics and media employees in their organizations, thanks to Apple's adoption of video as a "killer app." IT Enquirer explained that "Final Cut Pro has become a leading choice for video editing and compositing in the sub US$10,000 category."

While UNIX was the OS of choice for digital video in the 1990s, many professionals migrated to Mac OS X when it was released. "Apple's focus on the special needs of media professionals gives enterprises a substantial incentive to consider deploying the Mac in niches where it can deliver application-specific value," IT Enquirer said of the Gartner report.

The article concluded: "IT managers should take a new look at the Mac for these specialty applications, which, in general, require little interaction with large-scale enterprise systems that would raise connectivity or interoperability issues."

Gartner's report sells for $195.

My Take
Gartner, for $195, will let you in on the big secret that Mac's should be given to your graphics and media employees. In other news... tomorrow the sun will rise, the earth will continue to spin on its axis, and Gartner still won't know their asses from a hole in the ground. Oh yeah, and here's the kicker...

"While UNIX was the OS of choice for digital video in the 1990s, many professionals migrated to Mac OS X when it was released."

Umm... hey Gartner folks? Did you know that OS X is UNIX?!? So technically, these folks haven't really migrated from anything... Oh yeah, let me run out and spend $195 on your utterly useless report. Gimme a break.

MacBook Pro 17-inch - days away

Picture 2Apple is expected to roll-out the 17-inch MacBook Pro in the next week, sources report, but a MacBook announcement is no longer slated to arrive in tandem, as previously reported.

The top-of-the-line MacBook Pro will make its debut at the National Association of Broadcasters, an industry tradeshow that kicks off Saturday with exhibits opening Monday. Apple has traditionally made product announcements the Sunday evening before the exhibits open.

The 17-inch MacBook Pro will sport a brighter display than its PowerBook G4 predecessor and is expected to remain on par with the 15.4-inch MacBook Pro in terms of features, Think Secret reported earlier this month. Sources have also speculated that the 17-inch MacBook Pro will ship with a 2.16GHz Core Duo processor and an option to upgrade to the yet-unannounced 2.33GHz Core Duo processor. Several reports in the last week have indicated that Intel will be cutting the price of current Core Duo processors and introducing faster models in the near future. The Core Duo currently tops out at 2.16GHz and is available as a build-to-order upgrade in the 15.4-inch MacBook Pro.

In January Think Secret offered a first look at features slated to arrive in Final Cut Studio 6. While sources have been unable to deliver additional information, it is expected that Apple will demonstrate its next-generation video editing software at the convention.

Apple offers developers Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
teaser

By Katie Marsal - AppleInsider.com

Picture 1Apple Computer this week emailed to its Mac OS X developers and posted to its Web site details of the upcoming Apple World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), which the company says will offer developers the first glimpse of its next generation operating system, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

Although Apple chief executive Steve Jobs had previously indicated that WWDC 2006 would revolve around the major OS upgrade, the company failed to mention Leopard in its WWDC materials until earlier in the week.

An e-mail sent to Mac OS X developers on Monday evening teased, "See Leopard before it leaps into action. Preview Mac OS X Leopard at WWDC."

"At WWDC, you'll get a special sneak preview of Leopard, Apple's next major release of Mac OS X," the email continued. "You'll also find five session tracks full of hands-on labs and in-depth technical presentations—along with unprecedented access to Apple engineers. Reserve your spot today."

Unlike previous years, where Apple listed detailed information for each WWDC conference session on its developer site, this year's online WWDC preview is so far less specific.

Instead of breaking down the more than 120 planned session with individual descriptions, Apple instead lists brief overviews of five core session categories, which include: Application Technologies, Development Tools, Graphics and Media, Information Technologies, and OS Foundations.

As in previous years, Mac OS X Developers who attend the conference are expected to receive a pre-release copy of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard on DVD, along with a new version of Apple's Xcode developer tools.

Early registration for the show runs through June 23 and offers developers a $300 discount on all packages.

Apple is also offering two additional promotions: a WWDC 2006 E-ticket and ADC Select Membership for $2000 ($100 discount) and WWDC 2006 E-ticket 5-pack for $6,380 ("buy four, get a fifth free"). During early registration, these packages are discounted by $300 and $1,200, respectively.

50% of Apple Retail Sales to Switchers

applestoreArik Hesseldah's Byte of the Apple column in Businessweek this week focuses on the salient numbers. No, not the financials. Something a little more interesting.

The number of switchers.

Hesseldah notes that Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer said in Wednesday's conference call that fully 50% of Mac buyers at the Apple Retail Stores are 'new to Mac'. That's significant.

It's unlikely that many have never used a computer before. The correct conclusion to draw is that they're coming over from the Windows side of the ledger.

Of course, it's difficult to know how accurate Apple's polling of customers is. Hesseldah figures that, of the 154,000 Macs sold at retail, around 77,000 people were 'new to Mac'. As Apple Retail Store locations grow in number, that figure should rise exponentially.

That doesn't count, of course, store.apple.com purchases, as well as third-party resellers.

Hesseldah is right to focus not only on the iPod 'halo effect', but also Boot Camp, which may well bring – let's call them 'semi-switchers' – into the Apple camp. Which means Apple's selling them hardware, rather than software. They'll use OS X, maybe as their main OS, but they also need to boot into Windows for work projects, or possibly to use Windows-only software. But the dual (or triple) boot capability of the Mac makes it the most flexible of all the personal computers on the market.

Despite the fractional fall in Apple's market share this quarter, desktop sales were surprisingly strong, given the entire line has not been transitioned to Intel. Moreover, had Apple been able to get enough MBP units out there (remembering iBook is still PowerPC), the figures would have been much more impressive. Once the full Mac model range is on Intel, and there are regular speed boosts and steady supplies, then we have every right to expect very strong sales indeed.

Especially sales to switchers. Welcome. Seriously.
