MLB.com at Bat 11

I’ve said it before and will say it again: I love the MLB At Bat apps for iOS. If you’re a baseball fan, especially if you like watching out of market games, you are out of your mind if you don’t have these apps. This is the future of sports broadcasting.

Claim Chowder: Anders Bylund

Andrers Bylund at Fool.com in March 2010, “HP and Friends Will Kill the iPad”:

I think I’ve mentioned this once or twice before, but it bearsrepeating until it sinks in: the Apple iPad is not unique, nornecessarily the best of breed in the media tablet sector it isspearheading. And it ain’t gonna help Apple shareholdersany.

Sure, the iPad will sell a few million units to the Applefaithful, of whom there are many. Being very little else than anoversized iPod Touch, or an extra-large iPhone without the phone,iPads will appeal to the same people who already use the minusculeversions. But there’s a flash flood of competing products comingup, and the iPad’s selling points of brand name, stylish design, and familiar user experience will have a hard time overcoming whatit lacks, like running multiple programs at once, presenting afull-featured Web experience with Adobe Flash support, or doinganything you can’t already get in the smaller iPod or iPhonepackages.

Of course, the HP tablet he thought was going to kill the iPad wasn’t the TouchPad, but rather the Windows 7-running “slate” that Steve Ballmer heralded at CES in 2010. But it’s not like Bylund has ever done better. Here’s a bit from his self-linked “ain’t gonna help” piece, from just two months earlier, “Worst Stocks of 2010: Apple”:

You’ve heard all about stocks being “priced to perfection,” butApple is way beyond that stage already. It’s priced through thefabled Reality Distortion Field, as though Steve Jobs will pullout iPhone-class megahits until the end of time — meaning thatthe iSlate will be a killer product, Macs will continue to stealmarket share, and the iPhone will wade ankle-deep through theblood and hydraulic oil of its many adversaries.

At the time, Apple’s stock price was around $200 a share. Since then, the “iSlate” has become a killer product, the Mac has continued to steal market share, and the iPhone 4 is the top-selling handset in the world. Today Apple’s stock closed at $366.

Rebecca Lynn Believes in Free

Venture capitalist Rebecca Lynn thinks Google will use its acquisition of Motorola to give away free Android phones:

I acknowledge the arguments that Google?s bill of materials onsmartphones, perhaps in the hundreds-of-dollars range, would betoo big a subsidy to absorb — at this present time. That cost isincreasingly decreasing. If Google is betting on a future that ismobile-centric, this is a bet that?s worth taking.

If we’re talking free as in “no-contract free”, keep in mind that most estimates of Google’s search revenue per Android user are in the range of $6-10 per year. So if you figure people keep their phones for two or three years, these giveaway phones would have to cost — what? — maybe $10 or $20 in order for Google to turn a profit?
