?I inherited the competitive iPhone OS project from JonRubenstein and Steve Sakoman when they left Apple. I quicklyshuttered the project after assessing that a modified Mac OS wasthe right platform to build the iPhone upon. It was clear that tocreate the best smartphone product possible, we needed to leveragethe decades of technology, tools and resources invested in Mac OSwhile avoiding the unnecessary competition of dueling projects.?

That pretty much directly contradicts the story laid out by (anonymous) sources in the original story. Fadell has long been gone from Apple — no reason for him to speak up now other than that he wanted to.
